Join us for an unconventional book club: 1 part story time, 1 part craft circle, 2 parts existential succor as the Boreal nights lengthen, 0 parts homework.

Each Wednesday, we’ll gather at Dappled Fern while former English teacher Ryan Leng reads out loud to us.

Our first book is Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. It’s the story of a little girl who wants to be a witch. Not the glamorous kind in billowing sleeves who prance around doing magick (with a "k"). The real kind, who wear practical, sturdy shoes and makes the difficult decisions, takes care of people, and tends to the edges of human and spiritual life.

As the book begins, young witch-to-be Tiffany Aching must defend her home against the monsters of Fairyland armed with only a frying pan and her common sense. Luckily she has some very unusual help: the Nac Mac Feegle – aka the Wee Free Men – a clan of fierce, sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men… and the memory of her gruff shepherdess grandmother.

Wee Free Men is categorized as a Young Adult novel and I am a firm believer that young adult novels are for everyone! I picture this as an intergenerational, primarily adult group though children are welcome!
