Book Club - Witches Abroad
Thursdays 6:30-8pm
September 11th-October 30th (or until we finish).
In Person and Online
Book Club is back! Settle in with us at Dappled Fern (or join this sweet community online from the comfort of your own home) to knit, sketch, whittle, or craft while Ryan Leng reads out loud!
This fall we'll listen to Ryan read Witches Abroad, a humorous fantasy novel in Terry Pratchett’s witches saga that finds the beloved witches Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlic traveling abroad stop a wedding and save a kingdom. At Dappled Fern, book club is a little unconventional: 1 part story time, 1 part craft circle, 0 parts homework, 2 parts existential succor as the nights lengthen on the North Shore.
Reader:
Our reader Ryan is a teacher, poet, and former librarian. He does all the voices and occasionally shares questions to help us reflect on the story and what it means to us.
About the book:
Inheriting a fairy godmother role seemed an easy job... after all, how difficult could it be to make sure that a servant girl doesn't marry a prince?
‘You can’t go around building a better world for people. Only people can build a better world for people. Otherwise it’s just a cage.’
There’s power in stories. The fairy godmother is good. The servant girl marries the prince. Everyone lives happily ever after . . . don’t they?
The witches Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick are travelling to far-distant Genua to stop a wedding and save a kingdom. But how do you fight a happy-ever-after, especially when it comes with glass slippers and a power-hungry fairy godmother who has made destiny an offer it can’t refuse?
It’s hard to resist a good story, even when the fate of the kingdom depends on it . . .
Witches Abroad is the third book in the Witches series, but you can read the Discworld novels in any order.
About the author:
Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own . . . a satirist of enormous talent.’
Sir Terry Pratchett was a beloved and bestselling grandmaster of fantasy who wrote more than fifty bestselling books. His novels have been widely adapted for stage and screen, and he was the winner of multiple prizes, including the Carnegie Medal. He was awarded a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to literature in 2009, although he always wryly maintained that his greatest services to literature was to avoid writing any.
